The classic mistake in Southeast Asia is packing as though you're heading somewhere remote. In truth you're heading somewhere with excellent, cheap shops on every corner. The whole art is packing light enough to move easily and trusting the region for everything else.
The short can't-buy list
Prescription medicine in its original packaging, a good factor-50, any specific tech, and a comfortable pair of shoes already broken in. That's most of the list. Everything else — clothes, toiletries, an umbrella, a cheap bag — is available locally for a fraction of home prices.
Dress for heat and temples
Loose, light, quick-drying clothes beat cotton that clings in the humidity. Pack one set that covers shoulders and knees for temples, and a light layer for over-air-conditioned buses and trains. Laundry services are everywhere and cheap, so a few days' worth is plenty.
Leave room to come home heavy
Half-fill the bag. You will come back with tailored shirts, market finds and gifts, and you'll have topped up on necessities as you went. Travel light through Southeast Asia and the region rewards you for it every single day.
